Alzheimer’s brain is a diabetic brain that develops resistance for insulin and this state prevents unlocking of the glucose doors in the brain. If the recent studies by medical fraternity are to be believed, there is a relation between the insulin dysfunctions in the brain cells and brain health. As a result, experts assert that diabetic patients have two-fold chances of developing brain disorders such as memory loss and other thinking skills. As a result of prolonged research on the relation between Diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease over last 10 -15 years, it has been widely concluded that Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive loss of brain cells that leads to memory loss and the decline of other thinking skills, is a type of Diabetes. “Diabetes generally occurs as a result of insulin resistance at target sites such as muscle and fat cells.
However, in this case, the brain acts as an insulin-resistant site, which results in brain dysfunctionalities”, said Dr Anil Bhansali, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER). Supporting the fact, a pre-clinical work by Smriti Gupta, a PhD student under the aegis of Prof Rajat Sandhir Department of Biochemistry, Panjab University suggested that the Alzheimer’s brain is a diabetic brain that develops resistance for insulin and this state prevents unlocking of the glucose doors in the brain. “The concern from diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease is increasing as there are a large number of people who have these. This is more serious since India is getting the dubious distinction of being the diabetic capital of the world”, said Prof Sandhir. As per the experts, insulin may not be required for entry of glucose into the brain but insulin is required for glucose metabolism in brain tissues.
