Early paddy sowing row: Punjab. Govt. initiate process to take legal action against farmers

To ban paddy plantation strictly before June 20, the Government has decided to take legal action against such farmers, who violate the directions of the Government. Although the Agriculture Department, on the direction of Government, has started destroying paddy sowing, where it has been done ahead of stipulated time, June 20. But after the threats from some farmers ‘outfits, the department has sought help from Police and Rural and Panchayat Department. Sources disclosed that to take legal action , notices have been issued to such farmers under the Punjab Preservation of sub-soil water act, in which there is provision for imposing fine up to Rs 10,000 per acre against violating of act.The Government has issued directions to sow the paddy June 20 onward to save the ground water. According to Agriculture experts, 16,000 cubic meter water is required for one hectare of paddy crop in the season, if the monsoon goes normal. This time, the area under of paddy crop will go up to 30 lacs hectare. Following the direction of the Government, the PSPCL has not increased the power supply and irrigation department also made the water closure in Canals so that the sowing of paddy can be prevented. But the farmers are on protest demanding release of 16 hours uninterrupted power and irrigation water supply. Challenging government’s directions, at some places the farmers have started sowing paddy. Director Agriculture, Punjab Jasbir Singh Bains told that at some places in Fazilka and Bathinda districts, paddy sown area has been destroyed. He said that directions have been given to officers to maintain a record of farmers who are going against the Government’s direction banning of sowing of paddy before June 20.He said that cases would be registered against violators. Sources told that a crucial meeting had been organised of various department related to crop by the Chief Minister, today, in which it was told to apply the direction, strictly.
Power disconnection if directions violated- Kangar

Minister for Power, Gurpreet Singh Kangar, talking to , said that the power connection will be disconnected of those farmers, who are found in violations of directions, issued by the Punjab Government for not sowing paddy before June 20. Minister said rules are rules for each and every persons and nobody would be spared. He expressed that to provide free power is the promise of the Government and it would be fulfilled.
