Ps5 Pro is back in focus after Polygon.com reported that Sony's Ai-Upscaling Tech Is No Longer Ps5 Pro Exclusive.
The move gives owners of the $499 base model access to the same neural‑network‑driven image enhancement that previously required the higher‑priced Pro. Effectively narrowing the performance gap between the two hardware tiers.
QSSR, a streamlined version of the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) engine that powers the Pro, analyzes each frame and reconstructs missing detail, delivering sharper textures and more stable frame rates without taxing the GPU as heavily as traditional upscaling methods.
According to a PlayStation Blog entry, the first games to support QSSR on the base PS5 will be Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, both slated for release later this year.
Developers have been lobbying for a similar solution since PSSR debuted on the Pro. Arguing that AI‑driven upscaling could extend the lifespan of titles on the older hardware.
Sony’s decision follows a broader industry trend toward AI‑enhanced graphics. A shift that has already reshaped the competitive dynamics between Sony and Microsoft.
Ps5 Pro and the policy shift
By democratizing the Pro’s flagship upscaling tech, Sony positions the standard PS5 as a more compelling value proposition against Microsoft’s Xbox Series S. This Relies on its own FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) pipeline.
Polygon reported that the QSSR integration “is no longer a PS5 Pro exclusive,” signaling that Sony expects the feature to drive additional software sales and keep the existing PS5 install base relevant through 2027.
Tom’s Hardware noted that the QSSR library was built in partnership with AMD, leveraging the same GPU architecture that powers both the base and Pro consoles, which should keep implementation costs low while delivering a noticeable visual boost.
For retailers, the upgrade could translate into a surge of firmware‑update‑driven traffic, as owners rush to enable the new mode before upcoming holiday releases.
From a business perspective, the move may also reduce the urgency for a PS5 Pro refresh, allowing Sony to focus on next‑generation hardware while monetizing its AI stack through licensing deals with third‑party developers.
Analysts at IDC have projected that AI‑enhanced upscaling could add up to 15 percent more console sales in the current generation. A figure that aligns with Sony’s stated goal of extending the console’s market relevance.
The timing also coincides with the launch window for several high‑profile exclusives. Meaning early adopters of QSSR could experience a visual edge that influences purchase decisions.
Overall, the rollout underscores Sony’s strategy to extract maximum performance from its existing silicon, a play that mirrors Microsoft’s recent push to bring DLSS‑like features to the Series S via driver updates.
Consumers should expect a simple firmware update to activate QSSR. With an on‑screen toggle that lets players compare native resolution versus upscaled output, according to the official Sony blog.
The next step for the industry will be measuring real‑world performance gains. As benchmark data from titles like Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei become publicly available.
